Air opens Pittsburgh Strip District office in $450 million tech expansion
Editorial illustration — Press Pass USAAir, a company that builds AI-native systems for the national security enterprise, opened a new 35,536-square-foot office in Pittsburgh's Strip District on Tuesday, advancing a previously announced 10-year, $450 million expansion in southwestern Pennsylvania.
The expansion covers payroll, tax revenue, employee benefits and capital investment in the region, backed by an initial $10 million build-out for the new office. The space will house a growing tech workforce working on software engineering, computer architecture and infrastructure, product development and artificial intelligence — and the company says its Pittsburgh workforce has grown by nearly 67 percent over the past year.
“The unique combination of a highly skilled workforce, world-class academic institutions, and a vibrant technology ecosystem makes Pittsburgh an ideal engine for our AI-native platform development,” said Tara Murphy Dougherty, Air's chief executive. The company recruits heavily from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh, whose graduates make up about 30 percent of its local workforce.
Chief Technology Officer Marco Corona, a Pittsburgh native who heads the Pittsburgh office, said the facility “establishes a direct pipeline between our region's unmatched technical talent and critical national security work.” The announcement is an expansion commitment rather than a single hiring number: the company did not say how many new jobs the Strip District office itself will add.
