The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Awiqli, the first once-weekly basal insulin for children 10 years and older with type 2 diabetes — cutting basal injections from seven a week to one.

Awiqli (insulin icodec), made by Novo Nordisk, is approved as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve blood-sugar control, the company announced October 23. The FDA's drug-news listing records the approval the same day.

“Individuals with type 2 diabetes and their families seek treatment options that may allow for more individualized care,” said Dr. Michael Radin, Novo Nordisk's executive medical director. “Awiqli reduces basal insulin injections from seven to one per week, which may help patients find a basal insulin routine that feels more manageable.”

Type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents is a growing public health challenge, Novo Nordisk said, with more young people diagnosed each year. The company pointed to modeling estimating nearly 84,000 Americans aged 19 and younger could have type 2 diabetes by 2050.

The approval does not change the basics of care, the company stressed: healthy nutrition, physical activity, family support and diabetes education remain central alongside medication.
