At least seven people were killed and 112 injured after two passenger trains collided in Egypt's Giza province on Sunday, the country's health ministry said.

Several carriages derailed after a train traveling from Giza to Fayoum hit the rear of another train heading from Cairo to Aswan, between Kafr Ammar and Al-Raqqa stations, about 76 kilometers (47 miles) south of Cairo, the Egyptian National Railways Authority said in a statement.

Dozens of ambulances were dispatched to carry the injured to nearby hospitals, and cranes were brought in to remove the wreckage after traffic on the Cairo–Upper Egypt line was disrupted, Egyptian authorities said. The health ministry said 45 of the injured have been discharged from hospitals after their condition improved.

The death toll rose during the day as rescue teams reached the wreckage: earlier reports from the health ministry had put the toll at four killed and 88 injured.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ordered a swift investigation into the collision and said anyone found negligent should be held accountable, according to a statement. He also offered his "sincere condolences" to those killed.

Egypt's railway system, the oldest in Africa and the Middle East, has a long history of deadly accidents. In 2019, a train lost control while approaching Cairo's main station in Ramses Square, igniting a fire that killed 25 people. In 2017, a train derailed and collided head-on with another on the way to Alexandria, killing more than 40 people.
