Editorial illustration — Press Pass USAA 17-year-old Erie boy was sentenced on Wednesday to 1½ to 5 years in prison for a February shooting that sent bullets into a house where a party was taking place, with two adults and 10 juveniles inside. No one was injured.
Emilio D. Estevez, who was 16 at the time of the shooting, was sentenced by Erie County President Judge John J. Mead after pleading guilty to one count of aggravated assault. Mead followed a sentencing recommendation reached with prosecutors, said Estevez's lawyer, Bruce Sandmeyer. Estevez had initially faced 50 criminal charges in the case, including 28 felony counts of aggravated assault.
Erie police said the shooting took place in the early morning of February 15 in the 4400 block of Schaper Avenue. Multiple gunshots were fired and two bullets struck the house while the party was underway inside.
Investigators wrote in the criminal complaint against co-defendant Brendon M. Hall that Hall had initially been at the party but left after getting into an argument. Hall and another person were then seen firing rifles in the direction of the residence, according to the complaint. Hall, 18, pleaded guilty on October 14 to three counts of aggravated assault and three counts of discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure, and is scheduled to be sentenced December 7.
