Israel says Hamas has been rearming and launching attacks in violation of the year-old, U.S.-brokered ceasefire, and has stepped up strikes in recent weeks. Hamas has denied trying to carry out attacks or rebuild its arsenal and accuses Israel of undermining the Gaza peace deal. Negotiators have made little progress on the ceasefire's terms for Hamas to disarm and Israel to withdraw its troops.
The United Nations Children's Fund said in a statement Wednesday that at least 351 children have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire — eight of them in the past six days — with around 800,000 children displaced and an estimated 60,000 having lost one or both parents. UNICEF's regional director called for transparent accountability and urged Israel to take effective steps to prevent further violence against children.
