Editorial illustration — Press Pass USAU.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced Monday that it has deported Kanand Ojha, a 45-year-old Guyanese national wanted in his home country for a 2015 murder, closing a case that spanned more than a decade.
Ojha was wanted in connection with the killing of Nephi Noel Luther, 20, in Georgetown, Guyana's capital, in 2015, according to ICE. He fled to the United States a week after the killing, the agency said, entering legally through Kennedy Airport in Queens. His lawful status was later revoked after officials learned of the outstanding arrest warrant in Guyana.
He was tracked down in Long Island City on September 8 and arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service's New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, a unit that includes ICE and Homeland Security Investigations personnel. ICE said he was deported to Guyana on September 18 and charged with murder there on September 21, according to the Guyana Chronicle.
Ojha's alleged accomplice, Ron Forde, was convicted of manslaughter in Guyana and sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2017, federal officials said.
