Illustration: Press Pass USAImmigration agents pointed a pepper spray canister at members of the feminist collective Colectiva Feminista en Construcción as they filmed an immigration operation in Río Piedras on Saturday afternoon, Puerto Rico's El Nuevo Día reported.
“Back off. You’re not going to like this. Step back,” one agent said to a member of the group, according to El Nuevo Día's October 25 report, which describes the agent aiming the canister at the person recording the video.
A second account, published October 24 and updated from El Nuevo Día's reporting, said agents pointed pepper spray and a taser at two collective members documenting the operation, and noted the same incident was also reported by Telemundo PR, NotiUno and WAPA TV.
The group says filming immigration officers in public is protected by the First Amendment and Puerto Rico's Right to Record Act, according to that account. El Nuevo Día reported that ICE's press office had not responded to its requests for comment at publication.
The incident took place in Río Piedras, a district of San Juan, during an operation the collective was documenting on video. No arrests of the collective members were reported in the accounts reviewed.
