Nigeria has confirmed its first case of Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease — a woman who recently traveled from Uganda — the World Health Organization confirmed on October 21. Health authorities have placed 44 contacts under monitoring as the regional outbreak reaches a fifth country.

The patient developed symptoms on October 7, four days after arriving in Nigeria, and sought care at a private health facility in Abuja on October 11. Laboratory testing confirmed the infection on October 20, according to Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. She is in isolation and receiving medical care; WHO officials say she is showing positive signs of recovery.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention activated its incident management system to coordinate the response, while WHO and its partners are supporting contact tracing and infection prevention. The West African Health Organisation (WAHO) says it is closely monitoring the situation to prevent cross-border transmission.

Nigeria is the fifth country to detect the virus since the outbreak was declared in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on May 15 — already the deadliest in that country's history, with more than 9,500 cases and over 4,200 deaths as of October 18. Uganda's earlier outbreak was declared over in August, and Kenya has reported nine linked cases. There is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment for the Bundibugyo strain.
