Editorial illustration — Press Pass USAA North Royalton firefighter died while battling a house fire in Broadview Heights on Monday evening, and a second North Royalton firefighter was seriously injured but is in stable condition, North Royalton Mayor Paul F. Marnecheck II said Tuesday. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Firefighters responded to the 2100 block of West Royalton Road on Monday, Nov. 2, before 9 p.m., according to WJW (Fox 8), as reported by FireRescue1. WOIO (19 News) reported the fire happened around 8 p.m. Monday. Radio traffic captured a mayday call and a report of a firefighter down in the basement, WJW reported. There are no details yet on what led to the mayday or how the firefighters were injured.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the fallen firefighter and his family, as well as our injured firefighter and his family," Marnecheck said, asking the community to keep the firefighters and their families in their hearts and prayers while respecting their privacy. The flag is flying at half-staff in front of the fire department on Royalton Road, WOIO reported.
As of Tuesday morning, West Royalton Road remained closed between Scottsdale Drive and Oakwood Drive. The identities of the firefighters have not been released. Condolences poured in from neighboring departments, including Cleveland, Euclid, Streetsboro and Warrensville Heights firefighters, and from Broadview Heights police officers, who said the North Royalton firefighter lost his life while assisting their safety services.
