Ohio offers $15 ride credits in seven counties to cut Halloween impaired driving
Editorial illustration — Press Pass USAOhioans in seven urban counties can claim a $15 Uber or Lyft credit for Halloween weekend under a state program aimed at preventing impaired driving, the Ohio Traffic Safety Office announced Wednesday.
Rides that start or end in Franklin, Cuyahoga, Hamilton, Montgomery, Lucas, Summit and Butler counties are eligible. Riders can redeem the credits from 5 p.m. Thursday, October 29, through 3 a.m. Monday, November 2, and rides cannot be scheduled in advance, according to the agency. A new round of credit codes will be released at 10 a.m. Friday, October 30.
The credits are part of Project Plan Ahead, the office's effort to give Ohioans a way home without driving under the influence. There were 19 fatal crashes that led to 19 deaths in Ohio during the state's five-day Halloween period in 2025, 13 of which involved a driver operating a vehicle under the influence, the agency said. Franklin County alone has recorded 83 impaired-driving fatal crashes over the past five years.
The program was first used for Memorial Day weekend this year, when 2,000 credits were claimed and more than 1,200 rides taken statewide. For Labor Day weekend, 5,502 credits were given out and 4,226 redeemed in the Uber or Lyft apps, with traffic fatalities down 55% that weekend compared with Labor Day weekend in 2025, according to the safety office.
