A suspected Ukrainian missile strike rocked the Russian city of Oryol on Oct. 23, setting fire to the Proton electronics plant and marking one of Ukraine's deepest long-range strikes into Russia in recent months. Oryol's governor confirmed damage to an industrial facility but did not name the plant.

Residents reported at least four explosions across the city, about 350 kilometers southwest of Moscow, as emergency sirens sounded. Oryol Oblast Governor Andrey Klychkov first announced a missile threat in the region, then acknowledged that "one of the industrial facilities was damaged in the Soviet district" of the regional capital.

Monitoring channels and independent Russian outlet ASTRA identified the target as the Proton plant, a manufacturer of semiconductor devices, LEDs and optoelectronic components. Ukrainian sources claim the plant supplies parts for Iskander-M ballistic missiles, S-71 Kover cruise missiles and Pantsir-S1 air defense systems. The Washington-based Institute for the Study of War said geolocated footage published Oct. 23 shows the moment of a likely Ukrainian missile strike against the facility.

Ukraine's Defense Forces had not issued an official statement on the strike as of publication, and the exact weapon used was disputed — some reports cited Storm Shadow cruise missiles, others Ukraine's domestically made Flamingo missiles. Casualty figures remained unconfirmed, with claims circulating in unverified channels but nothing confirmed by Russian officials or Kyiv.

The Oryol strike was one of several Ukrainian long-range attacks reported across Russia on Oct. 23, including drone attacks that temporarily shut down all four Moscow airports and a strike on a chemical plant in Perm Krai — underscoring a widening campaign against Russian defense-industrial targets.
