Pennsylvania health officials reported the state's sixth measles-associated death this year on Wednesday, as the outbreak centered in the state grew to 1,467 confirmed cases, including 283 hospitalizations — a toll that has made Pennsylvania the epicenter of the worst U.S. measles year in more than three decades.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 1,467 confirmed cases as of November 4, Reuters reported. Nationwide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had counted 4,852 confirmed cases as of October 29, the highest annual total in 35 years.

The latest death comes days after New York reported its first measles-associated child death in more than 30 years, a child in Lewis County whose death was reported on or before November 2. The back-to-back deaths underline how far the outbreak has spread beyond Pennsylvania: cases have now been reported across 47 states.

The federal count and the state count do not line up. The CDC has recorded three measles-related deaths this year, but has not named the states where they occurred. Reuters noted the gap follows a policy shift under U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., under which the CDC now tracks measles deaths through the National Center for Health Statistics' mortality data instead of relying on state health departments' figures.

The CDC has previously said it would send additional support to Pennsylvania to help investigate the outbreak. Neither the Department of Health and Human Services nor the Pennsylvania Department of Health immediately responded to Reuters' requests for comment on the latest death.

The stakes extend beyond this year's case count. Next week, the Pan American Health Organization's expert commission is expected to decide whether the United States still meets the criteria for measles elimination, a status the country has held since 2000. Losing it would be a formal recognition that measles is once again spreading on an ongoing basis in the United States.

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that causes fever, cough and a characteristic rash, and it can lead to severe complications including pneumonia and encephalitis. Health officials say the MMR vaccine remains the most effective way to prevent it.
