Victor Romero, the retired NYPD narcotics detective accused of gunning down a driver in a road-rage shooting on the George Washington Bridge, is free after posting $1 million bail on Friday, according to Department of Correction records cited by the New York Post on October 25.

Romero, 62, was initially charged with murder after allegedly shooting and killing Koran Irvine, a 46-year-old Con Edison worker and father of two, in a drive-by shooting on the bridge on Tuesday evening, the Post reported. His charges were downgraded to manslaughter at his Thursday arraignment, even as prosecutors called the case “particularly senseless,” the Post said.

Irvine's family attorney, Keith White, told the Post he was shocked by the downgrade and the bail decision. “I think if he was charged with murder, he should have been remanded without bail,” White said.

According to earlier reporting on the case, Romero and Irvine — both Rockland County residents — nearly collided during a lane change on the ramp to the bridge's upper level. Investigators allege Romero then tailed Irvine's sedan, pulled alongside it and fired a single shot through the window, striking Irvine in the shoulder, before driving off.

Romero was arrested the day after the shooting, after detectives located the vehicle involved. The case remains pending, and no trial date has been reported.
