The attack came just hours after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Russia was preparing a new large-scale strike on energy facilities, bridges and civilian infrastructure.
Ukraine's Air Force reported that at least six ballistic missiles were launched at the capital within a few minutes shortly before 11 p.m. local time on Friday, Nov. 6, the Kyiv Independent reported. Residents received an all-clear signal about 30 minutes later, but the respite was brief: a new air alert sounded shortly before midnight, and a fresh missile wave targeted the city shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday. Explosions rocked the city again at 3:04 a.m. and 3:30 a.m., and the Kyiv Independent said attacks remained ongoing at the time of its report.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said debris from the attack struck a five-storey apartment building in the city's western Solomianskyi district, and the facade of another residential building was damaged. The Kyiv City Military Administration said a fire broke out at a non-residential building in the same district and a building housing a kindergarten was damaged. The administration said two people were injured and were receiving medical care, while the State Emergency Service reported three people wounded in the city, among them a child.
"Explosions in the Kyiv suburbs. The enemy is hitting infrastructure with ballistic missiles," Klitschko wrote on Telegram. Reuters reported that officials continued to warn residents of the potential for more strikes hours after the attack.
Outside the capital, Kyiv Oblast Governor Tymur Tkachenko said a Russian jet-powered drone struck a home in the Brovary district, causing a fire and injuring one man, who was pulled from the rubble and hospitalized with burns and multiple shrapnel wounds.
Earlier in the evening, Zelenskyy told Ukrainians in his nightly video address that intelligence pointed to another massive Russian strike on infrastructure, likely targeting bridges, energy facilities and civilian infrastructure. The attack comes three days before U.S.-led talks including Ukrainian and Russian negotiators are due to open in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, seeking a resolution to the four-and-a-half-year-old war. The last such talks took place in February.
Kyiv, a city of 3 million, has come under relentless assault in recent weeks as Russia presses its annual campaign against Ukraine's power grid. The city endured its largest strike on energy this year on Nov. 3, leading to widespread blackouts and water supply cutoffs, the Kyiv Independent noted.
