Security guard kills gunman after woman fatally shot at Tampa-area Citibank campus
Editorial illustration — Press Pass USAA gunman crashed a car through a fence at the Citibank Center campus in Brandon, Florida, on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, and fatally shot a woman before an armed Citibank security guard shot and killed him in an exchange of gunfire, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.
The shooting unfolded at lunchtime at the sprawling campus about 9 miles northeast of downtown Tampa, near Princess Palm Avenue and Falkenburg Road. Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Frank Losat said the man drove over several medians and a grassy area, crashed through a fence and came to a stop in an outdoor courtyard where employees were having lunch. The man got out of the car and fatally shot a woman with a rifle, Losat said.
The timeline was fast. At 12:11 p.m. ET, the sheriff's office received multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired in the building's plaza. Within a minute, a sheriff's unit arrived, Losat said. At about 12:15 p.m., an armed Citibank security guard confronted the gunman in the building's cafeteria, and the two exchanged gunfire. The suspect was shot and taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he died.
"The security guard that's employed by Citibank stopped the threat," Losat said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon. "Was there potential for further violence? Absolutely. So kudos to that security guard and the people they employ." Losat commended the guard's training, saying it potentially saved many other lives. The guard was injured in the exchange of gunfire, and at least four other people were treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries; investigators had not determined by Wednesday afternoon whether those four were hurt by gunfire, the vehicle, or otherwise.
More than 365 sheriff's deputies responded, working alongside specialized units to secure the area, and more than 3,000 employees were evacuated from the complex in about two and a half hours through room-to-room sweeps, Losat said. About 3,200 employees were on site at the time of the shooting. The sheriff's office said there was no longer a threat to the public and asked people to avoid the area around Princess Palm Avenue and Falkenburg Road while the investigation continued.
Sheriff Chad Chronister described the shooting as a targeted incident. But investigators had not released a motive by Wednesday afternoon, and Losat declined to say whether the suspect and the woman who was killed knew each other. Neither person's identity had been released. Citi chair and CEO Jane Fraser said in a statement that the woman who was killed was a Citi employee.
The Citibank Center is a 588,000-square-foot campus of office buildings that houses thousands of the banking giant's employees. The sheriff's office asked anyone with relevant video footage to send it to [email protected] as the investigation continues.
