Melania Trump brokers local ceasefire in Ukraine's Oleshky to evacuate stranded civilians
Editorial illustration — Press Pass USAFirst Lady Melania Trump has secured a localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the besieged city of Oleshky, in the Kherson region, to deliver humanitarian aid and evacuate stranded civilians, the White House said Friday.
The ceasefire will begin on Oct. 29. Oleshky, occupied by Russia and about five miles behind the front lines, is on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe: 1,700 to 2,000 residents remain — mostly elderly, along with about 50 children — down from roughly 24,000 before the war. Food, drinking water and medicine ran out in February, and about 90% of the city was flooded after the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam.
"Oleshky's remaining population is comprised primarily of elderly residents who urgently need medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water," the first lady said in a statement. "It was abundantly clear that without my intervention, the possibility to bring humanitarian aid into the city and to evacuate the elderly would be impossible."
The White House said Trump and her representative worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to define the terms. Non-military civilian teams from both countries will visit residents to assess their needs; those who wish to evacuate will receive coordinated transport to a destination of their choice. Newsmax cameras will have exclusive access to document the effort.
In her role, described by her office as an "exclusive intermediary" between the warring nations, Trump previously negotiated the return of 34 displaced children this year, including Ukrainian infants taken by Russia.
