All-clear in Toledo: chemical leak evacuations lifted, employee error blamed
Editorial illustration — Press Pass USAAuthorities gave the all-clear on Friday for Toledo residents to return home after a toxic chemical leak forced evacuations and shelter-in-place orders — and Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz blamed the release on employee error.
The tank began leaking glycidyl methacrylate into the air the night of Oct. 20 at the MC Tank Transport facility in north Toledo. With the chemical still inside, there was an explosion risk that kept hazmat crews from approaching the tank.
"As of late last night, the final contents of the tank vented out and so now the tank is entirely empty," Kapszukiewicz said at a Friday news conference. "It did take longer than we thought it would, longer than we wanted it to, frankly."
The evacuation zone had already been reduced to a quarter-mile radius on Oct. 22 before the final order was lifted Friday afternoon. "At this time, we do feel confident that the site is safe," said Toledo Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Blake Molnar.
