U.S. Steel's board has approved full funding for a nearly $3 billion hot strip mill at its Mon Valley Works – Edgar Thomson Plant near Pittsburgh, one of the largest current steelmaking investments in the United States.

The project replaces aging equipment with modern steelmaking technology, lifting annual production capacity from about 2.2 million tons to 3.5 million tons and expanding the range of steels the company can produce for automotive, appliance and line pipe customers, the company said. New walking beam furnaces and an in-line slab sizing press will use less fuel, eliminate a cutting step and reduce scrap.

“For generations, the Mon Valley has built America, and steel has built lives here,” said President and CEO David Burritt. “This nearly $3 billion investment is about making sure that story doesn't just continue but gets even stronger.” Construction begins after permits are received, with initial production expected in late 2029. The new mill replaces the aging hot strip mill at the nearby Irvin Plant.

The investment will maintain jobs across Pennsylvania and generate up to $58 million in state and local tax revenue over three years, according to an economic impact study commissioned by U.S. Steel from Parker Strategy Group. U.S. Steel is now owned by Tokyo-based Nippon Steel, which completed its acquisition of the company earlier.
