The Vatican published a sweeping new document Thursday on how to pass on the Catholic faith in a time of "epochal change" — and cautioned against triumphalism over a reported rise in baptisms in countries including the United States and France.

The document, titled "Venite ad Me" ("Come to Me"), was issued by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith under its prefect, Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, and approved for publication by Pope Leo XIV. It was written in response to a request first made by the late Pope Francis toward the end of his life. At more than 25,000 words and eight chapters, it addresses a "crisis in the intergenerational transmission of the Christian faith," the breakdown of the family, and the role of new digital technologies.

In a section on the "new frontiers of evangelization," the document remarks on "the growing number of conversions and returns to the Church, especially among youth and young adults," in secularized areas of Europe and America. Citing data from the French bishops' conference, it reported a 26% increase in baptisms in France in 2026 — the vast majority of the newly baptized younger than 40 and seeking the faith after a time of crisis, spiritual awakening or contact with other believers.

But "a broader view of the situation," the document reads, "suggests adopting a cautious approach when evaluating this reality," adding that the growth in baptisms has coincided with the challenge of making sure the newly baptized maintain their faith. "While it is appropriate to avoid triumphalistic attitudes in this regard, it cannot be denied that these phenomena constitute concrete signs of hope and evangelical vitality," it said — calling for stronger community, welcome and formation of new members.
